Moving Day!

So you've found the one! The place you will call home. Now its time to pack up everything and move. This can be a somewhat stressful process but not if you prepare properly. The best thing to do is to set up a plan for packing and unpacking to make a smooth transition. Here are some tips to help you along the way.

- Before throwing everything into boxes, its a good idea to start off with 3 piles...Keep, Donate, Toss. While you start pulling your belongings out to start packing, think about each item. Is this something you use frequently? Is this something that just collects dust? Are there articles of clothing that haven't seen the light of day for some time? Moving is a great way to rid yourself of the stuff we accumulate over the years.

- Each room should have designated boxes. Label them with a large sharpie, or use a color-coded system to help the moving company easily identify where each box should go.

- Pack heavy items in smaller boxes, and pack light items in larger boxes. Large boxes can be awkward or difficult to carry, so make it easier on yourself and keep the heavy items in the small, easy to manage boxes.

- Ask your mover if they provide Wardrobe boxes, which make packing your closet much easier. If not, you can take a large trash bag, cut a small (1"-2") opening in the center of the bottom, pull a grouping of hanger hooks through, then cover your clothing with the bag.

- Label each box, with priorities in mind. Do you HAVE to have your coffee first thing in the morning before functioning? Well when you pack those boxes labeled "kitchen" make sure you mark one box with "unpack first". Put just the items you know you'll want the morning after the big move.

- Pack your cleaning supplies last. Do a final cleanout of your old home or apartment after everything has been moved or packed in the truck.

- The first night in your new home! Its exciting, but you'll also probably be exhausted from rearranging furniture and moving boxes. Make sure you don't have to dig through boxes to get your sheets for bed or towels for a shower. Pack them in one dresser drawer so they are easily accessible.
